Firefighting in today’s society is both challenging and exciting. The mission of the City of Port Neches Fire Department is to reduce deaths, injuries and property loss from fire, hazardous situations, emergency medical situations and other disasters, by providing excellent, state of the art, pacesetting life and property preservation and emergency services, unhampered by tradition, while recognizing our people as the key to our success. Our success has been the ability to select top notch applicants from an eligibility list to become our firefighting force.

If you’re interested in becoming a City of Port Neches firefighter, here are the qualifications: You must complete a written examination, a job related physical work readiness assessment, be at least 18 years old, possess a high school diploma or a GED, Hazmat technician certified, be eligible for a Class B State driver’s license, have a good driving record.  There is no minimum or maximum requirement for height and weight.

Applicants also must have 20-20 vision or eyesight corrected to 20-25. You must be in good general health, be of good character and reputation, and you must not ever have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.

The City of Port Neches Fire Department offers you a good annual starting salary. You’ll get 15 days vacation your first year. You also get 15 sick days per year, which you may allow to accumulate indefinitely. The City of Port Neches offers 10 paid holidays each year, uniforms and equipment, exclusive of undergarments, fully paid hospital and medical coverage, the Texas Municipal League Retirement System, and paid group life insurance.

The City of Port Neches is regulated by Texas Local Government Code 143 “Civil Service” and requires all qualified applicants to be a Basic Certified Firefighter with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection and an Emergency Care Attendant certified through the Texas Department of Health before they are allowed to take the entry-level fire fighter examination. Those applicants scoring 70 or higher will be allowed to continue the hiring process. Those individuals who have a test score of 70 or higher and successfully complete the physical work readiness assessment will then be placed on an employment eligibility list. Eligible names are submitted to the Chief of the Department for an interview and background investigation. When a vacancy occurs, the top person on the list is contacted and is offered the position pending a satisfactory interview and physical & psychological examinations. You will be required by law to be finger printed and recorded with the Federal Bureau of Investigations.  The City of Port Neches is an equal opportunity employer and strongly encourages participation of minorities and females.
